Shopify or Next.js: which is right for your store?
Use a Shopify theme if you want the quickest, simplest way to sell online and your needs fit Shopify's templates. Choose Next.js, on its own or as a headless front end for Shopify, when you need a faster, fully custom experience, content-heavy pages, or features a theme cannot handle well. Many brands start on a theme and move to Next.js as they grow.
The three options
- Shopify theme: Shopify hosts everything and you customise a theme with Liquid. The fastest route to a working store.
- Headless Shopify with Next.js: Shopify still runs products, checkout and orders, while a custom Next.js front end handles what customers see.
- Custom Next.js site: no Shopify at all. Suits catalogues, enquiry-led businesses, platforms and stores with simple payment needs.
When a Shopify theme is the right call
If you sell a standard catalogue, want to manage everything in one admin, and are happy within what themes and apps can do, a well-built Online Store 2.0 theme is quicker to launch and cheaper to run. Most growing brands should start here.
When Next.js is worth it
Next.js earns its place when speed and flexibility matter more than out-of-the-box features: content-rich brand sites, unusual product journeys, multiple storefronts, or experiences that would need a stack of apps on Shopify. Pages are rendered ahead of time or on the server, so they load quickly and are easy for search engines to read.
The trade-off is upkeep: a custom front end is yours to maintain, so it suits businesses with a developer or a studio on hand.
What we built with each
Kharbuj, a seed brand selling to farmers across India, runs on a custom Next.js and React storefront with WhatsApp ordering. For brands already on Shopify, we redesign and rebuild themes, and recommend headless only where it clearly pays off.

Is Next.js faster than Shopify?
A well-built Next.js site is usually faster than a typical Shopify theme with many apps, because pages are pre-rendered and only load the code they need. A lean, well-built Shopify theme can also be fast.
Can I keep Shopify checkout with a Next.js front end?
Yes. With headless Shopify, products, cart and checkout stay on Shopify through the Storefront API, while Next.js renders the pages customers browse.
Is headless Shopify more expensive?
Usually, both to build and to maintain, because the front end is custom. It pays off when speed, content or custom journeys matter enough to your sales.
Which is better for SEO?
Both can rank well. Next.js gives more control over page speed, structured data and page structure; Shopify themes handle the basics automatically. Content and links matter more than the platform.
